A very honest book for believers
I was so grateful to have this little book next to my easy chair this Advent. After the draining election campaign and ultimate defeat, I was not feeling particularly joyful. John Pavlovitz' words opened a path through the forest of saccharine imagery that characterizes Christmas in modern America and allowed me to glimpse the real Jesus. I partucularly appreciated the way he invited the reader to embrace the reality of their emotions, even the negative ones. I found his reflection on the "Positivity Gospel" to be extremely insigtful, he writes "it is the dangerous myth that belief should always leave us feeling good, that Jesus is the immediate antidote to despair, and that to experience something less than complete jubilation is to commit heresy." I, like many believers, do not always feel very optimistic about the state of our world as we find it. John reminds us that " the journey with Jesus is just as often spent in the shadow spaces, the rough and darkened stretches where light and hope seem to be in such short supply." It gave me on the Saturday of the third week of Advent and still gives comfort and hope to read his words. "Today, one of the most faith-affirming acts you can do is openly admit to your depression, your grief, your not okayness. This isn't a moral defect or a character flaw. It's your authentic confession of faith, which is enough."
Slowing down
Love the daily messages. So very relatable. We’re actually going to revisit them during Lent unless you write one for the season.
Perfect Advent Gift
I love this devotional for many reasons…it is simple yet profound in its message. This book came into my life at the perfect time, as “low” was exactly how I was feeling about the season of Christmas. Thank you for the daily reminders of what is truly important during Advent and throughout the year!
Low: An Honest Advent Devotional
I am thoroughly enjoying using Low as my personal Advent discipline. I may try to form a small group next year and use it again. I've loved the questions I downloaded, and I'm glad I got the signed edition to go with all my other Pavlovitz books. Keep up the good work, John. Your message is so needed in this broken world. Merry Christmas!
